Dreaming of poop in Chinese dream interpretation: meaning
Poop in a dream is one of the best-known lucky signs in Chinese folk tradition. Someone who dreams of excrement, and especially who steps in it or gets soiled with it, could according to many dream books expect money.
Within this tradition
Few dream readings surprise Western readers as much as this one: in the Chinese tradition poop in a dream is often read as a sign of wealth. It is such a well-known reading that many Chinese people tell it with a laugh. Someone who dreams of stepping in poop, or of excrement on their clothes, often hears that money is on its way.
Why that is so is explained in different ways. One explanation points to farming: manure made the land fertile and was therefore literally valuable. Another points to the way Chinese dream interpretation often works: what is unpleasant in daily life can mean the opposite in a dream.
The details matter. A lot of excrement or an overflowing toilet is often read as more money. Poop you flush away or clean up can mean money flowing away again, or that you are losing worries. And unpleasant feelings in the dream, such as shame or disgust, are weighed too: the feeling colours the reading.
Strikingly, other traditions come to the same conclusion. In Winti and in classical Islamic interpretation too, poop is linked with money. That makes poop one of the few dream images on which traditions that never knew each other almost agree.
