Dream interpretation apps compared (2026): Oniri, DreamApp, Elsewhere and more

We make a dream app ourselves, so we are not neutral. That is why this comparison sticks to facts you can check, uses the same criteria for every app, and says plainly where the others do more.

In short

  • We compare five dream apps, our own included, on interpretation, price, languages and privacy, using facts you can check.
  • Oniri and Dream Journal Ultimate are strong for lucid dreaming, other apps for psychological reading.
  • Dreamkin is the only one that reads a dream through eleven traditions, from Winti to Islam.
  • Besides interpretation, always check what an app does with your dreams: who can read them and whether they train AI.

How we made this comparison

Dreamkin is our own product, so this page starts with a disclosure: we are not neutral. To keep the comparison fair, every app, ours included, is described with the same criteria, and every fact about another app comes from that app's own website or its App Store or Google Play listing, as checked on 2 October 2026.

We did not install or test the other apps for this page, and we give no scores or star ratings. Prices are those listed on the US App Store at the time of checking; they differ by country and change over time. Apple's privacy labels are quoted as Apple shows them, based on what each developer declares.

What to look for in a dream app

Dream apps do quite different things, so it helps to know what matters to you first.

How it interprets. Some apps read dreams through psychology, some through symbol dictionaries, some let you choose a lens. Dreamkin reads a dream within the tradition you choose. Others focus on lucid dreaming more than interpretation.

Capturing the dream. Voice input matters at 6 a.m. So do reminders, widgets and a fast way to write.

Seeing patterns. A journal becomes valuable over weeks and months. Look at how an app shows what returns.

Privacy. Dreams are intimate writing. Check what is tracked, whether dreams are used to train AI, and whether you can export and delete everything. Our guide to dream privacy has a checklist.

Price and languages. Free tiers differ a lot, and so does the number of languages.

Where the other apps are stronger

A comparison written by one of the apps should say clearly where the others do more. Here is what we found.

Oniri is the most complete for lucid dreaming: reality checks, audio cues and guided techniques, alongside voice recording and transcription, AI images of dreams, statistics, widgets and native apps for iPhone and Android. If lucid dreaming is your main interest, it offers far more than Dreamkin does.

DreamApp is available in about thirty languages, adds mood check-ins and an AI chat about your dreams, and works with therapy platforms for referrals. If you want a psychology-focused reading with a route to a therapist, that is its strength.

Elsewhere puts a lot of care into patterns: it detects recurring characters, settings and symbols and shows charts over time, with symbol interpretations by David Fontana and thematic insights by the dream researcher Kelly Bulkeley. Its App Store listing names more than forty languages.

Dream Journal Ultimate is the lowest-cost option, with unlimited dreams for free and a single small in-app purchase listed, plus a public Dream Wall where people share and discuss dreams, and lucid-dreaming lessons.

Dreamkin, by contrast, is a web app without App Store or Google Play versions, it has no lucid-dreaming tools, no AI images and no community, and it offers five languages in the app.

What Dreamkin does differently

Dreamkin is built around one idea: a dream means something different depending on the tradition you read it in. You choose one of eleven traditions, Winti, Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Santería, Vodou, Akan, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Chinese dream tradition or Wicca, or a universal reading, and the reading speaks in that tradition's terms, with its own care and limits. Readings never predict illness, death or misfortune, and Dreamkin does not prescribe rituals.

Around the app there is a public library in English, Dutch and French: symbol pages that set eleven traditions side by side, guides to each tradition, and a glossary.

Your dreams go into a private Dream Book that opens chapters as it grows, with voice input for mornings when typing is too much. There are no ads and no tracking cookies, analytics is off unless you turn it on, and according to our privacy policy dreams are not used to train AI. You can try a reading without an account.

Which app fits whom

If you want to learn lucid dreaming, look at Oniri or Dream Journal Ultimate.

If you want a psychology-based reading and a possible route to therapy, look at DreamApp.

If you care most about long-term patterns and a researcher's perspective, look at Elsewhere.

If you want to share dreams with others, Dream Journal Ultimate has a community built in.

If you want your dream read within your own tradition, privately, look at Dreamkin.

Many people use more than one. Whatever you choose, the habit matters more than the app: write the dream down the moment you wake.

A note on privacy labels

Apple's privacy labels are declared by the developers themselves and summarise what an app collects and whether it is used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. They are a useful first check, not a full picture. For anything you care about, read the app's own privacy policy, and check whether dreams are used to train AI models, and whether you can export and delete your data.

Dreamkin is not in the App Store, so it has no Apple label. What we collect and why is set out in our privacy policy.
