Dreaming of a cat in Islam: meaning
In classical Islamic interpretation a cat is often read as someone from your own circle who quietly takes. At the same time the cat is beloved in Islamic culture, and that affection colours the reading.
Within this tradition
In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, the cat regularly stands for a thief from within the household: someone who lives within your circle and takes something unnoticed, whether possessions, time or trust. A cat that scratches or bites is then read as harm from that person, in proportion to the pain in the dream. Chasing away or catching a cat is interpreted favourably: you find out who or what was taking from you.
At the same time the Islamic tradition shows a striking affection for cats. One of the best-known companions of the Prophet was nicknamed Abu Hurairah, father of the kitten. And according to a well-known tradition, the Prophet said of cats that they are not impure, because they are among those who go about among you. The cat is thus seen as a housemate, an animal that belongs to the household.
That is why a calm, friendly cat in a dream can also be read favourably: a house in which things are well, a housemate who simply belongs. It is precisely the cat's double nature, familiar yet independent, that makes the interpreter look at what the cat did in the dream.
As always in tabir, the dreamer's state counts too. People who keep cats often simply dream about them, and such dreams come from their own life.

Is a cat in a dream unfavourable in Islam?
Not always. Classical interpretation often reads the cat as someone who quietly takes, but a calm cat can also stand for a household at peace.
Why is the cat linked with a thief?
Because the cat lives in the house, moves unnoticed and takes what she wants. Classical interpreters ordered animals by such traits.
