Dreaming of dying in Buddhism: meaning

In Buddhism reflecting on death is a recommended practice, maranasati. A dream about your own death is therefore not read as doom, but as a reminder of impermanence, and as a chance to look at what really matters.

Within this tradition

The Buddha advised his followers to reflect on death regularly. In the Anguttara Nikaya he asks monks how often they think of death, and praises those who do so with every breath. This practice, maranasati, is not meant to frighten. It helps you live with attention, and cling less to what passes anyway.

In that light a dream about your own death is a spontaneous form of that practice. The mind lets you feel what it is to let go of everything. Many practitioners take such a dream as an occasion to ask: if this were my last day, what would matter?

In Tibetan Buddhism sleep, dream and death are closely connected. The bardo is the intermediate state after death, and falling asleep is sometimes compared to dying, dreaming to the bardo. Dream yoga is therefore also seen as preparation: those who stay clear in the dream are practising to stay clear when dying.

Buddhism also teaches that nothing stays unchanged, not even a fixed self. A dream in which you die can therefore also be about the dying away of an image of yourself. That need not be gloomy: letting go of who you thought you were makes room.
