Dreaming of fish in Winti: meaning

Within this tradition

Water has a place of its own in Winti. Rivers, creeks and the sea are the domain of the watra winti, the water spirits, among them the watra mama. Whatever lives in the water belongs to that world, and fish are its most familiar inhabitants. A fish in a dream is therefore read first as an image from the water world: something moving beneath the surface, something you cannot quite see yet.

Alongside that there is a widespread Surinamese folk saying: dreaming of fish means that someone is pregnant, you or someone around you. Many people grew up with it and will mention it the morning after. Dreamkin describes this as folk belief. A dream says nothing about an actual pregnancy, and it is not a prediction.

What the fish does matters most. Catching fish, especially a good catch, is usually read as earnings or provision: something you can live from, coming your way through your own effort. Clear water with fish swimming calmly is read favourably, as things flowing as they should.

A dead fish, or fish in murky water, is read rather as something that is no longer flowing: a matter that has stalled, or a relationship that needs care. Fish that slip out of your hands can mirror an opportunity you feel you are missing.

A large fish that speaks or looks at you is read as a stronger image from the water world. In that case families sometimes seek out someone who knows the tradition well; Dreamkin describes this, but does not prescribe it.
