Dreaming of fish in Islam: meaning
In classical Islamic interpretation fish often stand for money or provision, the rizq God gives. The Quran also tells of two remarkable fish: that of the prophet Yunus and that of Musa.
Within this tradition
In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, fish in a dream are often read as money, possessions or provision. A fresh, large fish is favourable; many fish can point to abundance. Catching fish is read as provision obtained through your own effort. Salted or spoiled fish is read more cautiously, as difficulty or worry.
The Quran tells how the prophet Yunus was swallowed by a great fish, and called out to God from its belly. His prayer, there is no god but You, glory be to You, I was among the wrongdoers, is said by many Muslims in times of distress. A dream in which a fish swallows you can be read along those lines as a period of anguish from which rescue comes, through repentance and prayer.
In the chapter of the Cave, Musa sets out to find a wise man. A fish they had brought as provisions leaps back into the water at the meeting of two seas, and it is exactly there that they find the one they were looking for. A fish swimming away can thus also be a sign that you are in the right place.
As always in tabir, the dreamer counts. Someone who fishes or works with fish during the day often simply dreams about it.
