Dreaming of flying in Buddhism: meaning
Flying appears in the Buddhist texts as one of the supernormal powers of advanced practitioners, but the Buddha warned against valuing it. In Tibetan dream yoga, flying is above all a sign that you know you are dreaming.
Within this tradition
Among the powers that can arise from deep meditation, the Pali Canon also names the ability to travel through the air, seated like a bird. At the same time the texts show the Buddha was reserved about it. In the Kevaddha Sutta he refuses to display such wonders to convince people, and calls teaching the dharma the only wonder that matters.
That gives a flying dream a charge of its own. Flying feels free and powerful, but the question is what you do with it. A dream in which you rise high above everything can point to a wish to escape what is difficult. Buddhism then invites you to see whether you are fleeing, or truly free.
In the Tibetan tradition, flying in a dream is often a sign of clarity. Dream yoga, one of the six yogas of Naropa, trains recognising the dream as a dream. Those who know they are dreaming can fly, walk through walls or change form in the dream. The aim is not the pleasure, but the insight that the images have no fixed reality.
Read this way, a flying dream is an invitation to awareness: notice that you are dreaming, notice what the mind creates, and carry that insight into waking life.
