Dreaming of flying in Islam: meaning
Flying in classical Islamic interpretation is often read as travel, as rising in standing, or as loosening from what bound you.
Within this tradition
The classical works rarely read flying as mere feeling. More often it concerns movement in your life: a journey, a change of place, or rising in position and standing.
Height and direction matter. Flying with a clear destination is read more favourably than aimless drifting. Ascending to the sky without returning is read heavily in some classical readings, and it is exactly there that the tradition keeps the most restraint.
Flying without wings is often read as undertaking something without the means it requires: ambition running ahead of what is there.
The dreamer's condition weighs heavily. For someone planning a journey the same dream is read differently than for someone who is ill.
The tradition also knows the night journey, al-isra wal-miraj, in which according to tradition the Prophet was taken in one night from Mecca to Jerusalem and then ascended through the heavens. That story gives ascending a sacred charge in the Islamic imagination. At the same time scholars warn against comparing one's own flying dream with that night journey: for ordinary people flying in a dream is usually about travel, ambition or the longing to break free from something.

Is flying a good sign in Islam?
Often, yes, but the classical interpretation looks at direction, height and the dreamer's circumstances before anything can be said about it.
What is the night journey?
Al-isra wal-miraj: the Prophet's journey in one night from Mecca to Jerusalem and then through the heavens, commemorated on 27 Rajab.
What do you do after a bad dream according to Islam?
Seek refuge in God, spit lightly three times to the left, turn over and do not tell the dream around. According to tradition it then cannot harm you.
