Dreaming of losing teeth in Hinduism: meaning
About losing teeth, many Hindu families share a well-known folk belief: it is said to point to illness or loss in the family. The tradition itself is more restrained, and Ayurveda reads most dreams as processing of body and mind.
Within this tradition
In large parts of South Asia, and in Surinamese Hindustani families too, there is a belief that a dream about teeth falling out announces bad news, often for a family member. Many people therefore wake from this dream especially worried. It is good to know that this is folk belief, and that the classical texts do not prescribe such a fixed link.
Ayurveda classifies dreams by their origin. According to the Charaka Samhita, most dreams arise from what you experienced, wished for or feared, or from a disturbance of the doshas. In Ayurveda teeth and bones are linked with vata, the dosha of air and movement, which increases with restlessness and tension. In that reading a dream about loose teeth can also be about stress or fatigue.
Those who do read the dream as a sign look at the details. A tooth that comes loose without pain is read more gently than a tooth lost with blood and pain. And as with many dreams, the timing counts: a dream just before sunrise is weighed more heavily than one early in the night.
Many families respond to such a dream with prayer, a lamp for the family or a gift to someone in need. That fits the tradition: the dream then becomes not a cause for fear, but an occasion to care for those close to you.
Common variations
A tooth falling out painlessly
Read more gently: something letting go of its own accord. Often also linked with tension or fatigue.
Losing teeth with blood
Read more heavily in folk belief, as worry about the family. Not a fixed prediction.
Losing all your teeth at once
An image of being overwhelmed. Ayurveda would rather look at vata and restlessness here.
A dream just before sunrise
Weighed more heavily in many texts and in folk belief than a dream early in the night.

Does losing teeth in a dream mean someone will die?
That is a well-known folk belief, but the classical texts do not prescribe it. Ayurveda sees processing of body and mind in most dreams.
What can I do after such a dream?
Many families pray for the family, light a lamp or give something to someone in need. That way the dream becomes an occasion for care rather than fear.
