Dreaming of water in Hinduism: meaning
In Hinduism water is almost always sacred water. It points to the rivers, and above all to Ganga, who according to tradition purifies. A dream about water is therefore often read as cleansing, or as a question about what needs to be cleansed.
Within this tradition
The sacred rivers hold a special place in Hinduism. Ganga is worshipped as a goddess who descended from heaven, and bathing in her water is held to purify body and mind. Many Hindus keep Ganga jal, water from the Ganges, at home for rituals. Outside India too that meaning has remained: water is used to purify at almost every puja.
A dream in which you bathe in clear, flowing water is therefore often read favourably. It can stand for a cleansing under way: something heavy being washed off, a period being closed. Murky or stagnant water is read rather as something not yet cleansed, which needs attention.
Water also connects with the ancestors. In tarpan, water is offered to the pitri, and after a cremation the ashes are often entrusted to a river. A water dream in which a deceased relative appears is therefore read in many families in that direction: the ancestors asking to be remembered.
The tradition is broad, and Ayurveda reminds us that a dream can also come from the body. Many water dreams are therefore simply read as processing. Only when a dream returns or will not let you go do people look for more in it, often together with a pandit.

Is dreaming of water favourable in Hinduism?
Clear, flowing water is usually read favourably, as purification. Murky water asks for attention instead. The context of the dream decides the reading.
What if in the dream I give water to a deceased person?
That recalls tarpan, the water offering to the ancestors. Many families read it as an invitation to remember them.
