Dreaming of being naked in Islam: meaning

In classical Islamic interpretation nakedness is often read as something being laid bare: a secret, a mistake or a vulnerability. But the Quran also speaks of a garment better than any clothing: the garment of God-consciousness.

Within this tradition

The Quran tells how Adam and his wife ate from the forbidden tree, after which their nakedness became apparent to them and they began to cover themselves with leaves from the garden. Shortly afterwards comes a verse in which God says he has given clothing to cover shame and as adornment, and that the garment of God-consciousness is the best. Nakedness and covering are therefore linked in the tradition with shame, but also with inner protection.

In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, being naked in public is often read as the exposing of something hidden: a secret coming out, a mistake becoming known, or a loss of standing. Someone who is ashamed in the dream and tries to cover themselves is then urged to look at what they have to hide, and whether it can be put right.

At the same time classical interpreters know a milder reading. Someone who is naked without shame and without others looking can, according to some, actually be freed from worries or a burden, as a newborn child is free. Here too, the dreamer and their state decide what fits.

As always in tabir: an anxious, embarrassing dream often belongs to what occupies your own soul. The advice is not to make too much of it and not to tell it around.
