Dreaming of school in Buddhism: meaning
The Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki said: in the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's there are few. Buddhism sees learning not as something you complete, but as an attitude. A dream about being back at school can therefore be an invitation to that beginner's mind in Buddhist readings.
Within this tradition
Shoshin, beginner's mind, is a concept from Zen. It means approaching every situation with openness, curiosity and without preconceptions, even if you already know a lot about it. Suzuki's book Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind made the concept known in the West. An adult who dreams of sitting in the school desks again can read it in this light not only as insecurity, but also as an invitation to look at their life with fresh eyes.
In the early Buddhist tradition the relationship between teacher and student matters. The Buddha even called good friendship, kalyanamitta, the whole of the holy life. A dream about a good teacher can thus be read as longing for guidance, or as appreciation for someone who shows you the way.
The Buddha also said in the Kalama Sutta that you should accept nothing merely because a teacher says it, but examine for yourself what is wholesome. A dream in which you disagree with a teacher can therefore also be about finding your own insight.
According to the Milindapañha many dreams arise from what occupies the mind during the day. A school dream in a busy period is often simply about pressure to perform.
