Dreaming that blood comes out of your mouth
Blood coming out of your mouth is one of the most intense dream images, but it is usually about words. The mouth is where you speak, and blood is what hurts. The dream often comes after a conversation in which something hurtful was said, by you or to you, or when you swallow something that really needs to be said. Sometimes the body plays a part too, for example with gum problems or grinding.
Words that hurt
Did you recently say something you regret? Or not say something that bothered you? Both can bring on such a dream. Spitting blood can be about something that has to come out, however painful. A mouth full of blood so that you cannot speak, about the feeling of having lost your voice. And blood after a blow to your mouth, about someone else's words that hit you.
Together with teeth
Many people dream of blood in the mouth together with teeth falling out. Then many traditions read the dream more heavily, often in the direction of family or security. See also the page about losing teeth. Without teeth the emphasis usually stays on speaking and silence.
The body
Sometimes the explanation is simple. Someone who grinds their teeth at night, has gum inflammation or bites their cheek can experience that as blood in a dream. A cold or nosebleed can play a part too. If you have complaints in your mouth or gums during the day, have them checked by your dentist or doctor. The dream itself is not a diagnosis.
How the traditions read this dream
Islamic
In classical Islamic interpretation blood is often linked with a lie or unlawful possessions, and the mouth with what you say. Blood from the mouth can therefore be read as a warning about words: gossip, a lie or something hurtful you said. The tradition sees such a dream as an encouragement to guard your tongue, and to put right what you damaged with words.
Islamic dream interpretation: meanings, symbols and Ibn Sirin →Christian
The letter of James calls the tongue a small part of the body that can do great things, as a spark sets a forest on fire. With the same mouth, he writes, we bless and curse. A dream about blood from your mouth can be read in that light as a question about your words: what did you say that hurt, and what do you need to repair it?
Biblical dream interpretation: dreams and symbols in the Bible →Zhou Gong
Traditional Chinese medicine links blood rising up with heat in the body, for example from stress, anger or poor sleep. In dream books such as the Zhou Gong Jie Meng spitting blood is read variously: sometimes as a worry coming out and so bringing relief, sometimes as a sign to watch your health. The tradition mainly advises rest, and a doctor if there are complaints.
