Dreaming that you are ill
Dreams in which you are ill, or receive a serious diagnosis, are usually not a prediction or a warning from your body. They are often about exhaustion, worries or the feeling that something in your life is unhealthy: work, a relationship, a habit. Sometimes real health worries play a part, or news of someone else who is ill. A dream is not a diagnosis, but it can be a reason to take good care of yourself.
What does the dream say about your life?
Many people dream of being ill in periods when they do too much. The dream then says, as it were, what your body may not: I cannot go on. Guilt, or the wish to not have to perform for a while, can also bring on such a dream: whoever is ill may rest. So look at what the illness in the dream gave you or took from you.
A serious illness
Dreams about cancer or another serious illness often come after news about someone around you, or in a period of health anxiety. Such a dream is frightening, but says nothing about your real health. If you have complaints or worries during the day, the right step is not working out what the dream means, but making an appointment with your doctor. That often also brings peace of mind.
If someone else is ill
If you dream that someone else is ill, the dream is often about your concern for that person, or about changes in your relationship. There too, getting in touch is often the best answer.
How the traditions read this dream
Islamic
In Islam illness is seen as a trial that can also bring purification: according to a tradition, God forgives some of a believer's sins through every hardship that befalls them. A dream about illness is therefore rarely read as doom. Classical interpreters sometimes see in it a period of difficulty that will pass. The advice is to pray for health, be grateful for what you have, and see a doctor if there are complaints.
Islamic dream interpretation: meanings, symbols and Ibn Sirin →Christian
In the gospels Jesus often heals people, and he also speaks of healing in a broader sense: from guilt, loneliness and exclusion. In the Christian tradition a dream about being ill can be read as a question about where you need healing, in your body or in your life. The tradition responds with prayer and care, and explicitly sees medical help as a good part of that care.
Biblical dream interpretation: dreams and symbols in the Bible →Zhou Gong
In Chinese folk tradition dreaming that you are ill is sometimes read favourably: as a worry or ailment leaving the body. Traditional Chinese medicine also looks at the balance in the body; dreams about illness can then point to exhaustion or a disturbed balance of yin and yang. The advice is rest, eating and sleeping well, and a doctor if there are complaints.
