Dreaming of a baby in Hinduism: meaning

In Hinduism a baby recalls above all the child Krishna, Bal Gopal, loved in countless homes as the playful little god who steals butter. A baby in a dream is often read as something new and precious, innocence, or a blessing for the household, and rarely as being about an actual child.

Within this tradition

Few images are as dear to Hindu families as Krishna as a baby. The stories of his childhood in Gokul, with his foster mother Yashoda, are told to every child: how he stole butter from the pots, how he charmed the cowherds, how Yashoda once looked into his open mouth and saw the whole universe in it. In many homes, in India and in Surinamese Hindustani families too, the child Krishna is cared for as Laddu Gopal: a small image that is woken, bathed, dressed and fed with the tenderness given to a real child. Devotion here takes the form of love for a baby.

A child's first years are also marked by samskaras, the rites of a life. Jatakarma welcomes the newborn, namakarana gives the child its name, and annaprashana, around six months, is the first taste of rice. Each marks a new stage, received with blessing.

In that light a baby in a dream is often read as something new that has been given to you: a plan, a relationship, a creative work or a new phase, still small and asking for care. Holding a happy, healthy baby is read favourably, as joy and blessing for the household. A crying baby is read rather as something that needs your attention, something in yourself or your life that is calling out. Seeing the child Krishna, or a baby that plays like him, is counted by many devotees as a very auspicious dream.

A baby dream says nothing about an actual pregnancy or birth. Folk belief in some families links it with good news, but that is not a prediction.
