Dreaming of a baby

A baby in a dream is rarely read literally. Almost every tradition sees in it something newly begun that still needs protection.

Why you dream about this

A baby in a dream is rarely about a real baby. People dream it when they want a child or have just had one, but just as often when they are busy with something quite different: a new job, a plan, a relationship that has only just begun. The image stands for something small and new that cannot yet do without care.

New parents also often dream about their baby, sometimes anxiously: losing the baby, forgetting it, or not being able to comfort it. That belongs to the enormous responsibility of that period and says nothing about you as a parent.

Each tradition reads the baby from its own worldview. In Winti a child touches the djodjo and the family line, so the dream is often about the bere. Islamic interpretation usually sees a responsibility or a worry in it, depending on how the baby behaves. Santería looks at the flow of aché and at the egun. Christianity often reads a newborn child as something beginning, and wicca as something that wants to be nourished.

The state of the baby is therefore the best key. A calm, healthy baby is read favourably almost everywhere. A baby that cries or gets lost asks for attention to something vulnerable, not for fear.

Akan

Among the Akan a baby receives its name on the eighth day, at the abadinto, the outdooring. The first name is that of the day of birth. A baby in a dream is often read in an Akan reading as new life, a new phase or an ancestor returning.

Hindu

In Hinduism a baby recalls above all the child Krishna, Bal Gopal, loved in countless homes as the playful little god who steals butter. A baby in a dream is often read as something new and precious, innocence, or a blessing for the household, and rarely as being about an actual child.

These differences are not opinions about one another. Each tradition reads a dream from within its own worldview, and that worldview decides what an image carries.

Common dreams about a baby

Holding a baby

Often read as a responsibility you are taking on or already carry. How the holding felt, light or heavy, says a lot.

A crying baby

Something asking for attention and not yet receiving it. In Winti that is often looked for within the family; in Islamic interpretation, as a worry making itself heard.

Forgetting or losing a baby

One of the most common anxiety dreams of new parents. Outside that period it is read as something newly begun that you are losing sight of.

Having a baby when you are not pregnant

Almost always points to something new arriving in your life: an idea, a task or a change. See also: dreaming of being pregnant.

Someone else's baby

Often read as a task being entrusted to you, or as involvement in something that belongs to someone else.

Frequently asked questions

Does dreaming of a baby mean I am or will be pregnant?

No. None of the traditions reads this image as an announcement. It is almost always about something beginning, not about a real pregnancy.

Why do I dream about a baby when I do not want children?

Because the baby stands for something new and vulnerable. Think of a project, a relationship or a side of yourself that is only just emerging.

Is it a bad sign if the baby in my dream is ill or crying?

Not in the sense of a prediction. It is read as something that needs attention. The question is what in your life is asking for care.
