Dreaming of being late in the Bible: meaning

The Bible has two stories about being late that balance each other. The bridesmaids who were not ready found the door shut. The labourers who only came at the last hour still received full wages. A dream about being late is read within that tension.

Within this tradition

In the parable of the ten bridesmaids, they wait with their lamps for the bridegroom. Five have brought extra oil, five have not. When the bridegroom comes in the middle of the night, the unprepared ones have to go and buy oil, and when they return, the door is shut. The parable is about watchfulness and being ready. A dream in which you are late for something important can, in the tradition, be held up against that parable: where are you not ready for what is coming?

But there is also the parable of the labourers in the vineyard. A landowner hires workers throughout the day, some only at the eleventh hour. At the end of the day everyone receives the same wage. That story is often read as comfort for those who think they are too late: with God it is never too late to begin.

Ecclesiastes adds a third perspective. There is a time for everything, a time to plant and a time to harvest. Someone who keeps dreaming of being late can ask whether they are living in the rhythm that suits their life, or rushing themselves towards a time that is not theirs.

As with every dream, discernment applies. A dream about being late in a busy week is often simply about that week, and asks for rest.
