Dreaming of being chased in the Bible: meaning

In the Christian tradition being chased is rarely read as an omen, and almost always tested before meaning is given to it.

Within this tradition

Discernment applies here more strongly than to any other image. A fearful dream waking you at night is not automatically read as a message.

The first question is what is happening in your life. Fear, guilt, avoidance or an unspoken conflict often produce such dreams by themselves. The tradition does not call that belittling: it is the most likely explanation and deserves considering first.

Only where a dream stays clear, returns, and moves you toward something good rather than toward fear, is it weighed more heavily.

Stopping and turning around is often seen within this tradition as the meaningful moment: not because it is brave, but because it asks what you are actually running from.

The Bible knows many stories of flight. David fled from King Saul for years and wrote psalms about it full of fear and trust. Elijah fled from Queen Jezebel into the wilderness, lay down under a bush and wanted to give up. An angel touched him, gave him bread and water, and said: get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. Striking too is the end of Psalm 23: surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. The Hebrew verb there actually means to pursue. Along those lines a chase dream can also be read the other way round: not only fear hunting you, but also care that will not let you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is this spiritual warfare?

Some movements read it that way, others explicitly do not. Dreamkin does not make that call and only describes how the tradition discerns.

What does Psalm 23 mean for a chase dream?

That the Bible also speaks of goodness and mercy pursuing you: not only fear hunts you, care will not let you go either.

Is such a dream a message from God?

Dreamkin does not say so. The tradition tests such questions through prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
