Dreaming of eggs in Judaism: meaning

On the Passover seder plate lies a roasted egg, the beitzah. And after a funeral mourners often eat eggs, because the round egg stands for the cycle of life. In the Jewish tradition the egg thus carries both mourning and hope. An egg dream can be read in that light.

Within this tradition

According to tradition the beitzah on the seder plate recalls the festival offering brought in the time of the temple. Many interpreters add a second meaning: an egg becomes harder the longer it is boiled, as the Jewish people grew stronger through oppression in Egypt. The egg is also a sign of mourning for the destroyed temple, and of new life, fitting spring and liberation.

After a funeral mourners traditionally eat the seudat havra'ah, the meal of consolation, prepared by others. Hard-boiled eggs and lentils often belong to it: round foods without an opening, as an image of mourning that has no mouth, and of the cycle of life and death. A dream about eating eggs after a loss can thus be read as grief carried by the community, and as hope that life goes on.

In the Talmud an egg is also used as a measure, the kebeitzah, for quantities of food. So the egg is both everyday and symbolic.

A dream about eggs can therefore be read in the Jewish tradition as mourning, as oppression that makes you stronger, or as new life. The rabbis stay sober: many dreams come from the thoughts of your own heart.
