Dreaming of birds in Judaism: meaning

In the Talmud a bird is one of the three dream images that point to peace, along with a river and a pot. In the Hebrew Bible the dove brings the sign after the flood that the waters are going down.

Within this tradition

In the tractate Berakhot the Talmud names three images that point to peace in a dream: a river, a bird and a pot. For the bird the rabbis refer to a verse from Isaiah, in which God protects Jerusalem as birds hover over their nest. A bird in a dream is read along those lines as a sign of protection and peace.

In the story of Noah the bird plays a leading role. Noah first releases a raven, which flies to and fro. Then a dove, which comes back because it cannot land anywhere. The second time the dove brings back an olive leaf: the sign that the waters are going down. The third time it does not return. A dove with a leaf in a dream therefore fits hope after a hard time.

Birds also have a special place in Jewish law. The commandment to send away the mother bird before taking the eggs or young is seen in the tradition as a lesson in compassion. A dream about a bird and her nest can thus be about care for the vulnerable.

The rabbis stay sober: many dreams come from the thoughts of your own heart. But according to the Talmud a bird dream belongs rather among the favourable dreams than the unfavourable.
