Dreaming of fingernails in the Bible: meaning
The Bible mentions nails rarely, but strikingly. In Deuteronomy a woman taken captive cuts her nails and shaves her head at the transition to a new life. And Nebuchadnezzar grows nails like bird claws in his time of madness. Nails are thus about change and about who you have become.
Within this tradition
Deuteronomy 21 contains a law about a woman taken captive in war. Before she goes to live in a new household, she shaves her head, cuts her nails and mourns her parents for a month. Interpreters read cutting the nails there as a transition ritual: saying goodbye to what was, making room for what is coming. A dream in which you cut your nails can be read in that light as farewell and a new beginning.
In the book of Daniel King Nebuchadnezzar is driven out of the community after raising himself above God. His hair grows like eagle feathers and his nails like bird claws, until he lifts his eyes to heaven and his reason returns. Very long, claw-like nails in a dream are therefore sometimes read as a warning against pride, or as a time in which you have lost yourself.
The story ends hopefully: Nebuchadnezzar is restored. So an unsettling nail dream need not have the last word either.
As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust. Often a dream about nails is simply about care or tension.
