Dreaming of blood in the Bible: meaning
In the Bible blood is life. It stands for covenant, protection and cleansing, but also for injustice that cries out for justice. A dream about blood is therefore read seriously, and often with hope, in the Christian tradition.
Within this tradition
Leviticus puts it simply: the life of the flesh is in the blood. In the Bible blood is never just a bodily fluid, but life itself. That is why it is central to the covenant. At the exodus from Egypt the Israelites put blood on their doorposts, and the house bearing that sign is spared. In the New Testament Jesus speaks at the Last Supper of the blood of the new covenant, and Christians confess that his blood cleanses.
In that light a dream about blood can be an image of protection or cleansing: something that covers and protects you, or washes you clean. Especially dreams in which blood appears as a sign on a door, on a cross or in a cup are read this way.
But the Bible also knows the other side. After the murder of Abel, God tells Cain that his brother's blood cries out to him from the ground. There blood stands for injustice that will not stay silent. A dream with blood on your hands or on the ground can therefore be about guilt that asks for confession, or about injustice you have seen and cannot forget.
As always, the tradition tests the dream against Scripture, prayer and conversation with people you trust. A dream about blood after an accident or operation is often simply processing.
