Dreaming of the forest in Haitian Vodou: meaning

In Haitian Vodou trees and forests are sacred. Gran Bwa is the lwa of the wild forest, of leaves and healing plants, and Loko the lwa of trees, healing and the first houngan. A forest in a dream is therefore often read in a Vodou reading as a place of knowledge, healing and encounter.

Within this tradition

Gran Bwa, great tree or great forest, is the lwa of the wilderness, of trees, leaves and the hidden life of the forest. He is connected with the knowledge of plants and herbs, which plays a large role in healing in Vodou. Loko is the lwa of vegetation and sacred trees, and together with his wife Ayizan is considered the first houngan and manbo. For Surinamese readers that is a striking parallel: in Winti too, Loko lives in a tree.

In Haiti certain great trees, such as the mapou, the kapok tree, are seen as dwellings of lwa. People sometimes leave candles or cloths there, and such a tree is not simply cut down.

Along those lines a dream about a forest is often read by practitioners as a journey to knowledge or healing. A great, old tree in the middle of a forest, especially a kapok tree, can recall a dwelling of the lwa. Gathering leaves or picking plants recalls Gran Bwa and the knowledge of healing. Getting lost in the forest can be about insecurity, but also about an initiation into something new you do not yet oversee.

Dreamkin does not establish that a dream comes from Gran Bwa or Loko, and gives no medical advice. Whoever finds such a dream weighs heavily discusses it with a houngan or manbo.
