Dreaming of a horse in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible the horse stands for strength and battle, but also for the question of what you trust in. The book of Revelation knows the four riders, and the rider on the white horse called Faithful and True.

Within this tradition

In the book of Revelation four horses appear, each with a rider: a white horse, a red one, a black one and a pale one. They are often read as conquest, war, famine and death. These apocalyptic riders are so well known that a dream about a red or pale horse stirs unease in many people. The tradition, however, does not read such images as a personal prediction.

At the end of the same book another white horse appears. The rider is called Faithful and True, and Christians see in him Christ overcoming evil. A white horse in a dream is therefore often read hopefully: victory, purity and faithfulness.

The Psalms ask a sharp question. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord. The horse there is the image of human strength and military power. A dream in which you ride a mighty horse can thus be read as a question about where you look for your security: in your own strength, or in something greater.

In the book of Job God describes the horse with admiration: its strength, its courage, its fearlessness. So a horse in a dream may also simply be an image of well-made strength. As always, the tradition tests the dream against Scripture, prayer and people you trust.
