Dreaming of a dog in the Bible: meaning
The Bible mentions dogs more often than you might think, and mostly not flatteringly. Yet the Christian tradition does not read a dog dream as a judgement, but as a question: what do you keep going back to, and who stands beside you?
Within this tradition
The best-known biblical dog image comes from Proverbs: as a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. The tradition often holds that image up against a dog dream. A dog that keeps coming back, or keeps sniffing at something, can thus be a question about habits or patterns you keep falling back into.
In biblical times dogs were mainly roaming, half-wild animals, and the word was also used as an insult. Paul even warns his readers to beware of the dogs, meaning people who do harm. An aggressive dog in a dream can therefore be read as something or someone attacking your faith or your peace.
But there are gentler texts too. In the story of the rich man and poor Lazarus, it is the dogs that lick Lazarus's sores while the rich man does nothing. And the Canaanite woman answers Jesus that even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the table, an answer he praises for her faith. There the dog stands for humility and unexpected faithfulness.
As with every dream, the tradition tests this one against Scripture, prayer and people you trust. A dream about your own pet is usually simply about your pet.
