Dreaming of a lion in Hinduism: meaning

In Hinduism the goddess Durga rides a lion or tiger when she defeats the demon Mahishasura, and Vishnu appears as Narasimha, half man, half lion, to protect his devotee. A lion in a dream is therefore often read as divine strength that protects and overcomes evil.

Within this tradition

Durga is one of the most powerful forms of the goddess. According to the Devi Mahatmya she was created from the combined power of the gods, to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura whom no one else could overcome. She rides a lion, her vahana, and carries the weapons of the gods in her many arms. During Navaratri and Durga Puja that victory is celebrated. The lion here stands for dharma, courage and controlled strength in the service of the good.

Narasimha is the fourth avatar of Vishnu. The demon king Hiranyakashipu had been granted the boon that neither man nor animal could kill him, neither inside nor outside, neither by day nor by night. When he wanted to kill his son Prahlada, a devotee of Vishnu, Vishnu appeared as half man, half lion, on the threshold, at dusk, and defeated him. Narasimha is therefore the image of protection for those who stay faithful, even when all seems lost.

Along those lines a lion in a dream is often read favourably in Hindu readings: divine protection, courage to take up a struggle, or strength to overcome something that threatens you. A wild lion can be read as strength not yet controlled, and so calling for self-control.
