Dreaming of a wolf

A wolf in a dream is often about instinct, threat and loyalty at once. Someone attacked by a wolf often feels besieged; someone running with wolves may be looking for their own pack or strength.

Why you dream about this

The wolf is one of the most contradictory animals in stories. In fairy tales he is the big bad wolf who eats Little Red Riding Hood. In nature he is a loyal pack animal that hunts together and protects its young. And in many cultures he stands for wildness, freedom and the night. That doubleness returns in dreams.

A wolf chasing or attacking you is often about the feeling that someone or something is besieging you: a colleague after your position, a situation that threatens you, or your own unrest. A wolf prowling around without attacking can point to distrust: someone who is not who they seem.

A pack of wolves is often about groups: belonging, or being shut out. A tame wolf, or a wolf walking beside you, is usually read more positively: your own instinct and strength that you are learning to trust. A wolf howling under the moon evokes loneliness or longing.

Traditions read the wolf differently. In the Quran Yusuf's brothers use a wolf as a lie to hide their deed. Jesus warns of wolves in sheep's clothing. And in wicca the wolf is instead a teacher of instinct and loyalty.

What it means in each tradition

The same dream. 3 traditions. 3 different ways of seeing it.

Islamic

In the story of Yusuf his brothers tell their father that a wolf ate him, while they themselves threw him into a well. In classical dream interpretation a wolf therefore often stands for deceit, an enemy or someone with unjust power.

Christian

In the Bible the wolf is the threat to the flock. Jesus warns of false prophets who come as wolves in sheep's clothing, and calls himself the good shepherd who protects his sheep. At the same time Isaiah promises a time when the wolf will live with the lamb.

Wicca

In wicca and related nature spirituality the wolf is not the big bad wolf, but a teacher: of instinct, loyalty to the pack and the ability to find your own way in the dark. A wolf in a dream is often read as an animal guide.

These differences are not opinions about one another. Each tradition reads a dream from within its own worldview, and that worldview decides what an image carries.
