Dreaming of moving house in Judaism: meaning

In Judaism a new home begins at the door. Within thirty days, or right away, a mezuzah is fixed to the doorpost with a blessing, and many families hold a chanukat habayit, an inauguration of the home. In that tradition a moving dream touches on blessing, beginning and protection.

Within this tradition

Deuteronomy says: write these words on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. That is why a mezuzah hangs on the doorpost of a Jewish home, a small case with a parchment scroll that includes the Shema. Whoever moves into a new home fixes the mezuzah with a blessing. Many people touch it when coming in and going out.

A new home often also comes with a chanukat habayit, an inauguration with family and friends, sometimes with bread and salt as a sign that the home will never be without food. A dream about a new home full of people and light can be read favourably along those lines: a beginning that is blessed.

The Torah also knows moves as a calling. Abraham hears: go from your country, your kindred and your father's house, to the land that I will show you. Someone who dreams of leaving without knowing where to can find recognition in that: a change that is exciting, but also a path.

The rabbis stay sober: many dreams come from the thoughts of your own heart. Someone really about to move often simply dreams of boxes and keys.
