Dreaming of keys in Judaism: meaning

The Talmud names three keys that God does not entrust to a messenger but keeps in his own hands: the key of rain, of birth and of the resurrection of the dead. In the Jewish tradition a key in a dream therefore touches on what ultimately does not lie in your own hands.

Within this tradition

In the tractate Taanit Rabbi Yochanan teaches that God did not give three keys to a messenger: the key of rain, the key of birth and the key of resurrection. They are the things people long for most and can least force themselves: a good harvest, a child, life after death.

That is why a dream about keys can carry a double charge in the Jewish tradition. On the one hand it is about access and responsibility: what has been entrusted to you, which door may you open? On the other about surrender: some doors do not open by pushing harder, but lie in God's hand. Someone who dreams of a key that does not fit can find comfort in that.

The mezuzah, the small scroll with Torah verses on the doorpost, also belongs with the door and the house. A dream about a door opening and a mezuzah you touch can be read as blessing when entering something new.

The rabbis stay sober: many dreams come from the thoughts of your own heart. Someone who keeps losing their keys during the day dreams about it too.
