Dreaming of prison in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible prison is often a place where God intervenes. An angel frees Peter from his cell, and when Paul and Silas sing at midnight, the doors fly open. Jesus also says: I was in prison and you visited me. A prison dream is therefore read with hope.

Within this tradition

In Acts 12 Peter sits chained between two soldiers. At night an angel stands beside him, the chains fall from his hands and the iron gate opens by itself. Peter at first thinks he is dreaming, until he stands in the street. In Acts 16 Paul and Silas sing hymns in their cell, and an earthquake opens all the doors. Both stories show that a prison does not have the last word in the Bible.

A dream in which you are stuck can be read in that light as a situation that feels oppressive, but in which liberation is possible. A door opening or chains falling is read hopefully. Singing or praying in the cell, like Paul and Silas, can stand for trust amid limitation.

In Matthew 25 Jesus says that whoever visits a prisoner visits him. A dream in which you visit someone in prison can therefore also be about care and mercy: is there someone around you who is stuck and needs you? And Jesus begins his ministry with the words of Isaiah: He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives.

As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
