Dreaming of rain in Islam: meaning

The Quran repeatedly calls rain a sign of God's mercy: He sends the winds as glad tidings of His mercy, and sends down rain with which He brings dead land to life. In classical dream interpretation rain is therefore often read favourably, as rahma, mercy, and provision.

Within this tradition

Rain often appears in the Quran as an image of life after death: as God brings dead earth to life with rain, so He will raise the dead. According to tradition the Prophet said when it rained: O God, let it be a beneficial rain. And when it rained too much: around us, not on us. In drought the istisqa prayer is prayed, the prayer for rain.

In the works attributed to Ibn Sirin, rain falling in its season and without harm stands for mercy, relief from worries, provision and the end of a hard time. Rain in a particular place can be read as blessing for the people there. Whoever washes with rainwater in the dream would be cleansed of worries or sins.

Rain that does damage, such as a destructive storm, blood-red rain or a rain of stones, is read more cautiously, as a trial or warning. The distinction is the same as in the Prophet's supplication: beneficial rain versus rain that harms.

As always in tabir the dreamer counts. Someone who lives in a rainy country also simply dreams about the weather.
