Dreaming of water in Islam: meaning
In Islamic dream interpretation (ta'bir al-ru'ya), water is classically among the most favourable symbols. In the tradition of Ibn Sirin it is connected with knowledge, life and purification.
Within this tradition
Clear water in classical interpretation stands for 'ilm, knowledge, and for life itself. Drinking clear water is read as taking in something valuable: insight, guidance, or a season of inner calm.
The state of the water is decisive. Pure and clear is read favourably; murky, salt or bitter water points instead to confusion, or to something you are taking in that does not nourish you.
Water is also tied to purification in the most literal sense. A dream of washing, or of wudu, may be about the wish to stand clean somewhere, with a person, with yourself, or in your prayer.
The tradition distinguishes three kinds of dream: the true dream (ru'ya), the dream arising from one's own self (hadith an-nafs), and the disturbing dream. Water dreams often fall into the second: they process what is present. Only a dream that is strikingly vivid and stays with you would the tradition more readily call ru'ya.
Common variations
Drinking clear water
Classically interpreted as receiving knowledge or guidance. Often dreamt in periods when someone is looking for an answer.
A flood
An image of something overstepping its own bounds. The classical interpretation reads this as a call for caution and for sabr, patience, rather than as a prediction.
Salty or bitter water
Often points to effort that gives no nourishment. What are you taking in that does not do you good?
Performing wudu or ghusl
Classically favourable: cleansing, repentance or the longing to stand pure before God.

Is every dream a message in Islam?
No. The tradition explicitly distinguishes dreams that come from your own thoughts from true dreams. Most dreams fall into the first category.
May you have dreams interpreted?
The tradition has a long history of dream interpretation, with the advice to share a dream with someone who wishes you well. Interpretation is seen as a possibility, never a certainty.
What does Zamzam water mean in a dream?
Water from the spring of Zamzam in Mecca is classically read as blessing, healing or knowledge. For someone who is ill it can point to recovery; it remains a possibility, not a prediction.
