Dreaming of snakes in Hinduism: meaning
In Hinduism the snake is no simple image of fear. Shiva wears a snake around his neck, Vishnu rests on the serpent Shesha, and the nagas are honoured with their own festival. A snake in a dream therefore touches on power, protection and the sacred.
Within this tradition
Snakes are present everywhere in the Hindu world. The nagas, serpent beings, are seen as guardians of water and treasure, and on Nag Panchami they are honoured with milk and prayers. Shiva wears the serpent Vasuki as an ornament around his neck, a sign that he masters what is dangerous. Vishnu rests between creations on the endless serpent Shesha.
In the yogic tradition, kundalini, the life energy at the base of the spine, is also depicted as a coiled snake. A snake rising up in a dream is read by some as spiritual energy starting to move. That reading belongs mainly to people who themselves work with yoga or meditation.
In folk belief the readings vary. In many families a snake in a dream is linked with prosperity or with offspring, and a snake passing calmly counts as favourable. A snake that bites or chases you is read rather as a warning or an obstacle. Some families link recurring snake dreams with the ancestors or with the horoscope, and then ask a pandit for advice.
For that reason the tradition looks mainly at what the snake did and how you felt. Fear belongs to the dream, but it is not a verdict on what is coming.

Is a snake in a dream a bad sign in Hinduism?
Not necessarily. The snake is connected with Shiva, Vishnu and the nagas. A calm snake is often read favourably, a biting snake as a warning.
What is Nag Panchami?
A festival at which the nagas, the serpent beings, are honoured with milk and prayers, often to ask protection for the family.
What if I keep dreaming about snakes?
Some families link recurring snake dreams with the ancestors or the horoscope. A pandit from your own circle can help interpret that.
