Dreaming of a turtle in Buddhism: meaning
The Buddha compared the chance of being born human to a blind turtle that surfaces once every hundred years and puts its head exactly through a floating yoke. A turtle in a dream can therefore remind you in Buddhist readings of how precious this life is.
Within this tradition
The parable is in the Pali canon. Imagine, says the Buddha, that someone throws a yoke with one hole into the ocean, which drifts in all directions with the wind. In the ocean lives a blind turtle that comes to the surface once every hundred years. How great is the chance that it puts its head exactly through that hole? Smaller still, says the Buddha, is the chance of a human birth, with the possibility to hear and practise the teaching.
The image is meant as encouragement: do not waste this precious chance. A turtle surfacing in a dream, or a turtle in the ocean, can be read in that light as a reminder to live consciously and make time for what truly counts.
The turtle also appears in another way. In a text on watchfulness the Buddha tells of a turtle that draws in its limbs when a jackal comes by, and only comes out again when the danger has passed. So a practitioner should guard the senses. A turtle withdrawing is therefore read as watchfulness and calm, not as fear.
According to the Milindapañha many dreams arise from what occupies the mind during the day. A turtle dream can therefore also simply be about slowness or impatience in your daily life.
