Dreaming of a turtle
A turtle in a dream is often about pace, protection and patience. It carries its home with it, withdraws when things get tense and arrives slowly but surely.
Interpret your own dreamWhy you dream about this
The turtle is one of the oldest animals on earth, and you feel that in the images it evokes: patience, wisdom, a long life. Everyone knows the fable of the hare and the tortoise, in which the slow tortoise wins because it keeps going. In dreams that message often returns.
A turtle walking slowly can be about your own pace: perhaps you are impatient about something that needs time, or afraid of falling behind. A turtle withdrawing into its shell is often about protection: you withdraw to keep yourself safe, or you notice someone else doing so. A turtle on its back, helpless, can point to a situation in which you feel vulnerable and need help.
A sea turtle swimming freely is often read favourably: moving smoothly with the current, a long journey going well. A turtle carrying its home can be about being at home in yourself, wherever you are, for example after a move or during a journey.
Old traditions give the turtle a large role. In Hinduism Vishnu as a turtle carries a mountain on his back. In China the turtle stands for a long life and carries the world. And the Buddha used a turtle in one of his best-known parables.
What it means in each tradition
The same dream. 3 traditions. 3 different ways of seeing it.
Hindu
In Hinduism Kurma, the turtle, is the second avatar of Vishnu. At the churning of the ocean of milk he carried Mount Mandara on his back, so that gods and demons could win the amrita, the nectar of immortality. A turtle in a dream therefore often stands for a firm foundation that makes something great possible.

In China the turtle is one of the four celestial animals: the Black Tortoise of the north. It stands for a long life, wisdom and stability. In the folk interpretation around the dream book of Zhou Gong a turtle in a dream is therefore almost always read favourably.

The Buddha compared the chance of being born human to a blind turtle that surfaces once every hundred years and puts its head exactly through a floating yoke. A turtle in a dream can therefore remind you in Buddhist readings of how precious this life is.
