Dreaming of getting married in Hinduism: meaning

In Hinduism marriage, vivaha, is one of the great life-cycle rites, sealed with seven steps before the sacred fire. A wedding in a dream is therefore often read as a bond, a promise or a new stage of life, and only rarely as being about an actual wedding.

Within this tradition

Vivaha is one of the samskaras, the rites that mark the stages of a life, and it is often called the most important of them. At its centre is the fire. Agni is the witness of the promises, and bride and groom take the saptapadi, the seven steps, each with its own vow: for food and strength, for prosperity, for children, for the seasons of life and for lasting friendship. In many weddings, in India and in Surinamese Hindustani families alike, the couple also walks around the fire, the bride's parting is marked with sindoor, and the groom ties the mangalsutra.

Marriage also carries a divine model. Shiva and Parvati, Rama and Sita, Vishnu and Lakshmi are couples whose union stands for the joining of complementary forces. Every year, at Tulsi Vivah, the sacred tulsi plant is ceremonially married to Vishnu, which marks the start of the wedding season in many regions.

In that light a wedding in a dream is often read as a union of some kind: a new bond, a commitment you are taking on, or two sides of yourself coming together. A wedding of your own is read differently from someone else's: the first points to your own choices and promises, the second more to what is changing in your family or circle.

Some folk lists read weddings by contraries, as if a wedding dream warned of sorrow and a funeral dream promised joy. Those lists differ from family to family and contradict one another, and Dreamkin does not use them to predict anything. A wedding dream is best read as a question about what you are binding yourself to, and whether you are doing it with the care the seven steps ask for.

Common variations

Your own wedding

A commitment or a new stage of life you are entering: a relationship, but also a job, a home or a decision.

Walking around the fire, or the seven steps

Recalls the saptapadi: a promise taken seriously, made before a witness.

Marrying a stranger

Often read as a new side of yourself, or a future you do not know yet, rather than as a person.

Someone else's wedding

Points more to change in your family or circle, and to your place in it.

A wedding that is interrupted

Doubt about a commitment, or something unfinished that comes in between. Not a prediction.
