Dreaming of getting married in Islam: meaning

In Islam marriage is a covenant described in the Quran as a source of tranquillity, affection and mercy. In classical interpretation a dream about getting married is therefore often read as a new commitment or responsibility.

Within this tradition

The Quran calls marriage one of the signs of God: He created partners for you from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquillity in them, and placed affection and mercy between you. According to a well-known tradition, whoever marries completes half of their faith. In the tradition marriage is therefore not a private matter only, but a covenant with weight.

In classical interpretation, getting married in a dream is therefore often read more broadly than a real wedding. It can stand for a new responsibility or position, a partnership, or a commitment you are entering into. Someone who marries a person they know may see a strengthened bond with that person. Marrying a stranger is often read as something new coming your way.

For someone unmarried who would like to marry, the dream is read closer to the literal, but even then with caution. Many dreams about getting married come from what occupies the soul, especially if you think about it a lot during the day. The tradition advises not taking such dreams as a promise.

Someone genuinely facing a marriage decision does not build it on a dream. For that, the tradition has istikhara, the prayer for guidance, and the advice of family and people with knowledge.
