Dreaming of a bear in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible the bear is above all a fierce animal. David tells Saul that as a shepherd he killed a lion and a bear that took a sheep, and that God would help him against Goliath too. Hosea compares God's wrath to a bear robbed of her cubs. A bear dream is read in that light in the Christian tradition.

Within this tradition

When young David offers to fight Goliath, he tells Saul that as a shepherd he killed a lion and a bear that carried off a sheep from the flock. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. A dream in which you overcome or fend off a bear can be read in that light as trust that you can handle a bigger challenge.

The Bible also uses the bear as an image of fierce, protective strength. Hosea has God say: I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs. And Proverbs warns: better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly. A mother bear in a dream can thus stand for love that turns fierce when what is dear to it is threatened.

In the vision of Daniel 7 the second beast is like a bear, an image of a world empire. And in Isaiah 11 the cow and the bear graze together, in the kingdom of peace. A dream in which a bear is peaceful can be read hopefully along those lines, as a threat coming to rest.

As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
