Dreaming of a bear in wicca: meaning
In wicca and many pagan traditions the bear is a power animal: an image of courage, protection and the wisdom of rest. It withdraws into its den in winter and comes out again in spring. A bear in a dream is therefore often read as an animal guide.
Within this tradition
The bear plays a role in many old European traditions. The Greek goddess Artemis was connected with the bear, and at Brauron girls danced as arktoi, she-bears, in her service. In Celtic and Germanic cultures the bear stood for strength and kingship; the name Arthur is often linked with the Celtic word for bear. The constellation of the Great Bear, always above the horizon, gave people direction at night.
Modern wiccans and other pagans take up that thread. The bear stands for grounding, courage and the strength to stand up for yourself and your own. Because it hibernates, it is also an image of inwardness: a time of rest in the dark, in which you gather strength for what is coming. That fits the dark half of the Wheel of the Year, from Samhain to Imbolc.
A bear accompanying you is read as protection and courage. A sleeping bear as an invitation to rest. An angry bear as strength you suppress and that asks for room, fitting shadow work. And a bear coming out of its den, as a new phase after a period of withdrawal.
Wicca has no central doctrine; what a bear means for you, you weigh against your own feeling.
