Dreaming of a bear

A bear in a dream is often about strength, protection and rest: it can be dangerous when disturbed, especially a mother bear, but it also withdraws into its den to rest. Which side you saw determines the reading.

Why you dream about this

The bear is big, strong and unpredictable, but also calm and protective. It can go its own way for days, and sleep through a whole winter. That combination makes it a rich image in dreams.

A bear attacking or chasing you is often about a force that overwhelms you: someone with a strong personality, your own or another's anger, or a situation bigger than you. A mother bear protecting her cubs is a well-known image of protective strength, for example of a parent, or of yourself when you fiercely defend something or someone.

A bear in its den, or a sleeping bear, is often about rest and withdrawal: a time to recover, or something resting in you that still needs to wake. A friendly bear, like a teddy bear, can stand for comfort and security, and refer to childhood. A polar bear is sometimes read as strength in a cold environment.

Traditions read the bear variously. In wicca and many pagan traditions the bear is a power animal of courage and rest. In the Bible the bear is above all a fierce animal, but David defeated one. And in classical Chinese literature a dream about a bear even stood for the birth of a son.

Wicca

In wicca and many pagan traditions the bear is a power animal: an image of courage, protection and the wisdom of rest. It withdraws into its den in winter and comes out again in spring. A bear in a dream is therefore often read as an animal guide.

Christian

In the Bible the bear is above all a fierce animal. David tells Saul that as a shepherd he killed a lion and a bear that took a sheep, and that God would help him against Goliath too. Hosea compares God's wrath to a bear robbed of her cubs. A bear dream is read in that light in the Christian tradition.

Zhou Gong

In the Book of Songs, one of the oldest Chinese texts, a dream about bears is interpreted as a sign of the birth of a son. The expression meng xiong, dreaming of a bear, thus became a polite way of announcing a pregnancy or the birth of a boy. In folk interpretation the bear is therefore a favourable sign.
