Dreaming of a wolf in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible the wolf is the threat to the flock. Jesus warns of false prophets who come as wolves in sheep's clothing, and calls himself the good shepherd who protects his sheep. At the same time Isaiah promises a time when the wolf will live with the lamb.

Within this tradition

The image of the flock runs through the whole Bible: God as shepherd, the people as sheep. The wolf is the threat from outside. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus says: beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves; by their fruits you will know them. Sending out his disciples he says: I send you out as sheep among wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

In John 10 Jesus calls himself the good shepherd, who lays down his life for the sheep, unlike the hired hand who flees when the wolf comes. A dream in which a wolf threatens the flock is often read in the Christian tradition in that light: watchfulness towards whoever misleads you, and trust in the shepherd.

Opposite that stands the prophecy of Isaiah 11: the wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the young goat. It is an image of the peace of God's kingdom. A dream in which a wolf lies peacefully beside a lamb or beside you is therefore often read hopefully, as reconciliation or an enmity ending.

As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
