Dreaming of birds in Winti: meaning
In Winti the meaning of a bird depends strongly on its kind. Practitioners read black birds or crows overhead as a threat; a large, splendid bird as Kromanti, the warrior spirit of the sky, making itself known.
Within this tradition
The sky pantheon in Winti is led by Tata Opete, who is linked with the vulture. The tapu kromanti, the warrior spirits of the sky, are also called flying gods by practitioners. Large birds therefore carry a special charge: they can point to the highest and purest forces in the tradition.
In a dream one practitioner read, a peacock-like bird entered a room. The reading was that a Kromanti was making itself known, with the advice to learn more about that winti. A large bird appearing calmly or showing you something is thus seen as honour rather than threat.
Black birds are another story. Crows or black birds flying or circling above your head are read by practitioners as a threat, and explicitly not as a good dream. The advice is then a luku, a consultation to see what is going on. Black birds are also named among the images through which wisi, harm from outside, can show itself.
Dreamkin never states such a thing as fact. A dream can be read that way within the tradition, but only a luku with someone you trust can confirm or refute what is going on. Many unsettling dreams turn out to be about tension or grief.

Why is a large bird linked with Kromanti?
Because the tapu kromanti are the warrior spirits of the sky, called flying gods by practitioners. Large birds point to that power.
Should I worry after a dream about black birds?
Practitioners take it seriously and advise a luku. But a dream is not an established fact; only a luku can make clear what is going on.
