Dreaming of a deceased loved one in Judaism: meaning
In Judaism the dead remain connected with the living through remembrance: the Kaddish, the yahrzeit and visits to the grave. A dream about a loved one who has died is often read as part of grief and memory.
Within this tradition
Jewish mourning has a fixed structure. After the funeral comes the shiva, seven days in which the family mourns at home and receives visitors. Then thirty days, shloshim, and for a parent a year in which the Kaddish is said. Every year on the anniversary of the death, the yahrzeit, a candle is lit and the deceased remembered.
Within those rhythms, dreams about the dead have a natural place. Many people dream of their loved one around the shiva, around the yahrzeit or at moments of missing them. The tradition often sees grief and love in that first: the bond does not end with death.
The Talmud and later sources also discuss what a deceased person does in a dream. What a deceased person gives you is usually seen as favourable in the tradition, and a deceased person appearing calmly as a sign of peace. A deceased person asking for something can be read as an encouragement to remember: a candle, a prayer, or tzedakah, charity, in their name.
Someone who stays unsettled by such a dream can follow the customs for a bad dream, or talk about it with a rabbi. Taking comfort from the dream is entirely normal within the tradition.
