Dreaming of a crocodile in Hinduism: meaning
In Hinduism the makara, a water creature often depicted as a crocodile, is the mount of the river goddess Ganga and of Varuna, god of the waters. A crocodile in a dream can therefore be connected in Hindu readings with the sacred river, with cleansing and with the power of water.
Within this tradition
The makara is a mythical sea creature, often shown in art as half crocodile, half fish or elephant. It is the vahana, the mount, of Ganga, goddess of the sacred river, and of Varuna, the ancient god of the oceans. On temple gates and jewellery the makara stands as guardian of thresholds. The sign of Capricorn in Indian astrology is also called Makara, and Makar Sankranti, the harvest festival in January, marks the sun's passage into that sign. Millions of people bathe in the Ganga then.
Along those lines a crocodile in a dream is not seen only as a threat in Hindu readings. A crocodile in clear river water can be read as nearness to Ganga: cleansing, a pure start or blessing. A crocodile that carries you safely, as strength that helps you through a transition.
There is also a well-known story of danger: Gajendra, king of the elephants, was seized by a crocodile in a lake and could not free himself. Only when he turned to Vishnu in surrender did Vishnu come to save him. A dream in which a crocodile holds you can be read in that light as a situation in which your own strength falls short, and as an invitation to surrender and prayer.
