Dreaming of a deceased loved one in Islam: meaning
Dreaming of someone who has died is taken seriously in the Islamic tradition, but read differently than in traditions treating it as direct contact.
Within this tradition
Classical interpretation gives close attention to what the deceased does and says. A deceased person appearing calm and in good condition is generally read favourably.
Where something is said, it carries weight. The classical works hold the thought that the dead are in the abode of truth and therefore do not speak falsely. What is said is read more attentively than what is seen.
A deceased person asking for something is often read as an urging to act on their behalf: praying for them, settling a debt, or completing something left undone.
The tradition also recognises that absence and grief produce such dreams by themselves. That is not seen as a contradiction, and the restrained tone remains.
According to a well-known tradition a person's deeds end at death, except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge from which others benefit, and a righteous child who prays for them. That is why praying for deceased parents and giving sadaqa on their behalf is an important act of love in Islam. Whoever dreams of a deceased parent can read the dream as an encouragement to do so. Visiting graves is also recommended, because it recalls the hereafter.
