Dreaming of an earthquake in the Bible: meaning
In the Bible the earth shakes at decisive moments: at the death of Jesus, at the resurrection, and when Paul and Silas sing in prison and the doors fly open. At the same time Elijah learns that God was not in the earthquake, but in a gentle whisper. An earthquake dream is therefore read with hope and discernment.
Within this tradition
In Matthew 27 the earth shakes and the rocks split at the moment Jesus dies. In Matthew 28 there is a great earthquake as the angel rolls the stone from the tomb. In Acts 16 Paul and Silas sit chained in prison and sing hymns at midnight; then comes an earthquake, the doors open and the chains fall off. In those stories the earthquake is an image of God intervening: what was stuck comes loose.
A dream about an earthquake therefore need not mean only misfortune in the Christian tradition. It can also be about a breakthrough: a situation that was stuck and suddenly starts moving, or chains falling off.
At the same time the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 teaches something else. Elijah stands on the mountain, and there comes a storm, an earthquake and a fire, but God is not in them. Then comes the sound of a gentle whisper, and in it God speaks. After a restless dream about an earthquake that can be an invitation to seek the silence.
Jesus also names earthquakes as signs of the last days, but adds: do not be alarmed. As always, the tradition tests a dream against prayer, Scripture and people you trust.
