Dreaming of an earthquake

An earthquake in a dream is almost always about the ground under your feet: certainties that are shaking. A relationship, a job, your health or your image of yourself suddenly no longer feels stable.

Why you dream about this

Of all disasters an earthquake is perhaps the most disruptive, because it undermines what we take for granted: that the ground stays still. In dreams an earthquake therefore often stands for a big change that touches your foundation.

Such a dream often comes in periods of uncertainty: a dismissal, a divorce, a move, an illness in the family or a new phase in which old certainties no longer work. The shaking ground is then the feeling that you can no longer build on anything. Collapsing buildings can stand for plans or structures that do not hold.

Surviving an earthquake, or staying calm while everything moves, is usually read hopefully: you turn out to be stronger than you thought. Helping people after an earthquake can be about your role in a family or group going through a crisis. And an aftershock can stand for worries that keep coming back after the worst is over.

Not every earthquake is negative. Sometimes something must shake before something new can come. Traditions often see the earthquake as an image of great change, or of the end of times. The Quran has a chapter called The Earthquake, in the Bible the earth shakes at the crucifixion and the resurrection, and in ancient China an earthquake was read as a sign from heaven.

What it means in each tradition

The same dream. 3 traditions. 3 different ways of seeing it.

Islamic

The Quran has a chapter called The Earthquake, Az-Zalzala. It describes how the earth will shake violently on the Day of Judgement and bring out its burdens, and how everyone will then see even the smallest good or evil again. An earthquake in a dream is therefore often read in the Islamic tradition as an encouragement to reflection.

Christian

In the Bible the earth shakes at decisive moments: at the death of Jesus, at the resurrection, and when Paul and Silas sing in prison and the doors fly open. At the same time Elijah learns that God was not in the earthquake, but in a gentle whisper. An earthquake dream is therefore read with hope and discernment.

Zhou Gong

In ancient China an earthquake was read as a sign from heaven: a disturbance of the balance between heaven, earth and humanity, sometimes as a verdict on the government. The scholar Zhang Heng built one of the first seismoscopes in the year 132. In folk interpretation an earthquake in a dream stands for great change.
