Dreaming of fire in Hinduism: meaning

In Hinduism fire is Agni: the god who carries offerings to the gods and who is present at the great transitions of life. A dream about fire is therefore often read as purification, devotion or a major change.

Within this tradition

Agni is one of the oldest gods of the Vedas, and a large part of the Rigveda consists of hymns to him. He is the messenger between humans and gods: what is offered into the fire, he carries upward. That is why fire is central to the havan or homa, the fire offering performed in many Hindu homes and temples, in Suriname and the Netherlands too.

Fire also marks the great transitions. At a wedding, bride and groom walk around the sacred fire, which witnesses their promises. At death, the body is entrusted to the fire. A dream about fire can therefore be about a transition: something ending, something beginning, or a promise you are making.

A calm fire, a burning diya or a havan is read favourably in most readings: devotion, purification and divine presence. A fire that spreads and does damage is read rather as anger, conflict or something getting out of hand. Fire purifies, but it also burns.

Ayurveda adds a sober layer. There, dreams about fire and heat are linked with an excess of pitta, the dosha of fire in the body. So not every fire dream is a message; sometimes it says something about your health or your mood.

Frequently asked questions

Who is Agni?

The Vedic god of fire, who carries offerings to the gods and is present at marriage and cremation.

Is dreaming of a fire unfavourable in Hinduism?

Not always. A calm, ritual fire is favourable. A fire that does damage asks for attention to anger or conflict. Ayurveda sometimes also sees fire dreams as a sign of too much pitta.
