Dreaming of fire in the Bible: meaning

In the Bible fire is above all an image of God's presence: the burning bush, the pillar of fire, the tongues of fire at Pentecost. It also stands for purification, as gold is refined in fire. A fire dream is read in the Christian tradition as presence, purification or trial, and destructive fire as anger or conflict.

Within this tradition

Fire runs through the Bible at decisive moments. Moses sees a bush that burns but is not consumed, and hears God speak from it (Exodus 3). Israel is led through the desert by a pillar of fire at night. At Pentecost the Spirit comes upon the disciples as tongues of fire (Acts 2). In each case the fire does not destroy; it shows that God is near.

Fire is also the image of purification. The prophet Malachi compares God to a refiner's fire, and the first letter of Peter speaks of faith tested like gold in the fire (1 Peter 1:7). The three young men thrown into Nebuchadnezzar's furnace walk in the flames unharmed, with a fourth figure beside them (Daniel 3): trial, and protection in the middle of it.

In that light a calm fire in a dream, a candle, a flame that burns without consuming, is read hopefully: presence, inspiration, a calling. A fire that cleans or burns away something old can point to a period of purification, painful perhaps, but leading somewhere. Standing in fire without being burned recalls the furnace in Daniel: trust in a time of testing.

A fire that destroys, a house on fire or flames out of control, is read rather as anger, conflict or something in your life getting out of hand. The tradition does not read such a dream as punishment or as an omen, but as a question about what needs attention. As always, the dream is held up against Scripture, prayer and people you trust.

Frequently asked questions

What does fire in a dream mean in the Christian tradition?

Usually God's presence (the burning bush, Pentecost) or purification (gold refined in fire). Destructive fire is read more as anger or conflict that needs attention, not as punishment.

Is a dream about fire a warning about hell?

The Christian tradition, as Dreamkin describes it, does not read fire dreams as threats. It looks first at what the fire did and what you felt, and at what in your life the dream touches.
