Dreaming of fire in Islam: meaning

In classical Islamic interpretation fire is read in two directions: as trial and warning, or as light and provision, depending on how it behaves.

Within this tradition

In the dream literature attributed to Ibn Sirin, and among later interpreters, fire is rarely read fire in one direction. Fire that gives light without burning, or from which warmth comes, is connected with provision and with knowledge.

Fire that consumes, reaches houses or touches people is read more heavily: trial, conflict, or something the dreamer should guard against. The classical works name that as possibility, not prediction.

Smoke without fire gets its own reading and is often linked with confusion: something whose source is not yet clear.

As with all images the dreamer's condition weighs in. For someone in conflict this image is read differently than for someone beginning something new.

The Quran knows two famous fire images that give hope. Ibrahim was thrown into a great fire by his people, and God said: O fire, be coolness and safety for Ibrahim. He came out unharmed. And Moses saw a fire on the mountain at night, went towards it in the hope of finding guidance, and heard there the voice of God. Fire in the Islamic imagination can therefore also mean rescue and guidance. A dream in which you pass through fire unharmed, or see a fire that shows the way, is often read hopefully in that light.

Frequently asked questions

Is dreaming about fire unfavourable in Islam?

Not automatically. The classical interpretation looks at whether the fire gives light or consumes, and at the dreamer's circumstances.

What does the fire of Ibrahim mean?

A Quranic story in which God makes the fire cool and safe for Ibrahim: an image of protection in trial.

What do you do after a bad dream according to Islam?

Seek refuge in God, spit lightly three times to the left, turn over and do not tell the dream around. According to tradition it then cannot harm you.
